Gotham

How does one summarize the city of everyone and everything? Can it even be done? New York is a living art gallery showcasing works of art ranging from engineering ingenuity to ballet, capitalism to cinema. But it is not ever stationary, it is always in a state of delta. Or is it? Is there space between the notes that one can find, isolate and capture, and in doing so, prove that this unique city, this once-in-Mankind moment is more than just a dream, an unfurling idea, but an actual fixed place with real things that hold their position in time and space? Or is it an ever-rolling kaleidoscope of "what if" that is more in our heads than in and of this world?

I can't hear the pleasing click of my shutter over the murmur of man, machine and motion, but I know it has operated and I know I have added that slick click forever to the mound of sound as I peer through the barrel of the lens.

Later, as I develop the photograph I see the unseeable: New York City, halted, frozen on film. Paused so beautifully and wonderfully and in that photograph is captured proof of an otherwise fluid event, the event we call the Capital City of Earth, the permanent, reliable, cozy, noisy, trustworthy, ponderous, staggering, still, yet never-ending and always "New" York.
